The first four bike sharing stations were implemented in Yichang today, with the stations focused around the city center and BRT corridor and capturing much media attention. Sanxia TV, Sanxia Daily, Sanxia Shangbao, and Sanxia Wanbao were interviewed by ITDP's Shanshan Li at the implementation site, where she explained the bikesharing system and implementation phases. The four demonstration stations are high quality, high-tech bikesharing stations installed by Jiadexing, a bikesharing system vendor based in Foshan, Guangdong province. The station next to the Yichang Mall is solar powered and already functioning, with the other three awaiting negotiations regarding on-site electricity connection before becoming operational. The entire first phase of the bikesharing system will cover the central city area with 27 stations and 645 bikes, and will be implemented by the end of 2015.

The initial demonstration stations cover the city center area enclosed by Dongshan Dadao, Yanjiang Dadao, Shengli Silu, and Xiling Erlu, and will include integration with the BRT system in terms of physical proximity, smart card payment system, and information & signage. The Yichang Urban Investment Company, which also administers the Asian Development Bank urban transport loan in Yichang, is in charge of the bikesharing system's implementation, and the Yichang Bus Group (which operates the BRT system) will be the bikesharing system operator. Pricing has not yet been finalized but usage will likely be free for the first 30 minutes of any trip.

The four demonstration stations have 50 docks with 25 bikes. The four stations use RFID and GPRS technology and a fully automated docking system. One station is solar powered, which avoids road excavation and also means negotiation regarding power supply is not needed. The bikes are high quality and using direct drive instead of a traditional bike chain. They have adjustable seat heights, airless tires, custom parts to deter theft, and an aluminium frame, with the bikes weighing 21kg in total. Terminals at each station provide real-time information on the availability of docks and bikes at nearby stations. The dock with bilateral lock (on each side of the wheel) holds the bike in a more stable and secure position. The solar power supply can provide power for up to 20 days of continuous rainy weather. Jiadexing Public Bicycle Company, the system supplier, is a high quality bike sharing system supplier, and has implemented bikesharing systems in Shenzhen, Zhuzhou, Liuyang, Wuhu and Shaoyang.

The first phase bikesharing system will have 12 large stations (30 docks), 12 medium stations (20 docks), and and 3 small stations (15 docks).
