Yichang NMT facilities improved along BRT corridor.
Pavement of pedestrian facilities along the Yichang BRT corridor is now about one-third completed. Asphalt paving of bike lanes along the BRT corridor is starting at some locations. ITDP is closely monitoring the quality of construction of the NMT facilities and is cooperating with the Guangzhou Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute, the Yichang Construction Bureau, and the Yichang Municipal Investment Company to ensure correct implementation of bike lanes, pedestrian facilities, greenery, and intersections, especially to ensure NMT connectivity and continuity. Bollards, pedestrian refuge islands, intersection turning radii, raised walkways across driveways and minor roads (to prioritize pedestrians over turning vehicles), and greenway designs are other areas of focus for ITDP's work on pedestrian & bicycle facilities in Yichang. With high quality NMT facilities and other improvements along and around the BRT corridor, the Yichang BRT will be a demonstration corridor not only for BRT, but for urban development more broadly.
In recent weeks senior city officials have strongly endorsed the need for bike lane continuity and high quality pedestrian and bicycle facilities along the BRT corridor, and have also backed a ban on parking on building setbacks along the BRT corridor. These are seen as 'added value' measures that the city needs to take to maximize the returns from the investment in the BRT infrastructure. A project is also underway, led by a local landscaping institute but with ITDP's input as well, to upgrade the landscaping along the BRT corridor initially at around 20 locations.
