Yichang BRT station area proposals
Much progress was made by ITDP in Yichang in 2014 on BRT station TOD and setback improvements that are needed to fully utilize the investment-generating benefits of the BRT corridor. This work was funded in part by the Climateworks Foundation, and in part by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The Yichang City Government is now planning to improve landscaping of the BRTcorridor from Gezhouba to Wuyi Plaza, which is the main and cenrtral section of the BRT corridor, including by removing setback parking and converting it into robust and high quality public and commercial spaces, especially in the vicinity of BRT stations. The city also plans to implement continuous bike lanes, adding more trees and greenery.
Over 2014, following from earlier work partially funded by the Grantham Foundation, ITDP designed 3 sites including Guomao Mall, Coach Terminal Station, and the Gezhouba building setback area. These three BRT station area sites are key locations along the BRT corridor, and currently are used primarily as open area parking lots. Proposals have been presented to the Vice Mayor, Planning Bureau, Construction Commission, Asian Development Bank, and Yichang BRT Project Management Office (Yichang PMO) at the site, and proposals have been agreed upon in principle. The Yichang Construction Commission assigned the Yichang PMO to lead the discussion and communication with Guomao Mall and Coach Terminal on setback and station area improvements at those high profile stations, and proposal refinement is ongoing.
