Demonstration NMT projects readied for Vientiane

As part of an ongoing Asian Development Bank funded study on non-motorized transport in several Asian cities, ITDP-China has prepared 'complete street' designs and other demonstration improvements for implementation in Vientiane in 2015. The proposed measures include a 206m complete street, 2 raised intersections, 3 raised side roads, 6 pedestrian refuge islands, and 13 speed bumps. All of the proposed measures except for two pedestrian refuge islands are concentrated in the western portion of the central historical conservation zone, which is also where pedestrian volumes are most heavily concentrated. The ADB NMT study includes a demonstration project component. The proposals are subject to approval by the ADB as well as by local officials, but have so far been well-received. If approved, the measures will be implemented in 2015 at a total cost of around US$298,000.
