From 3-9 June, ITDP-China joined the ITDP regional staff meeting in Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. Site visits were undertaken in both cities where best practices, especially on non-motorized transport (NMT), were seen and discussed internally and with nine of ITDP China’s partners from GMEDRI, Guangzhou Planning Institute, Guangzhou Transport Planning & Research Institute, and ADEPT. These NMT improvements included covered walkways, raised and some air-conditioned elevated walkways connecting to transit and adjacent buildings, sidewalk widening and pavement improvements, reduced turning radii at intersections, mid-block crossings, permeable medians, raised driveways, continuous motorcycle lanes, 24 hr public access through mixed-use developments, speed tables, bollards, way finding, public seating, walking tours, and public space improvements. These retrofitted NMT improvements in Kuala Lumpur were documented and will be used in ITDP China’s work in the region. ITDP China’s staff and invitees showed keen interest in the projects and expressed interest in application in China.
