Guangzhou BRT 5th year anniversary celebrated
Spring Festival marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Guangzhou BRT in February 2010, reported at the time by ITDP as the'Year of the Transit Tiger'(pdf).Five years after opening, the Gold Standard(www.brtstandard.org)Guangzhou BRT, with its revolutionary high capacity 'direct service' operational mode, continues to heavily influence the planning and design of BRT systems worldwide. ITDP with the BRT Operation and Management Company together hosted a BRT photo exhibition at Tiyu Zhongxin pedestrian tunnel, to showcase the impacts of the BRT system. The display included before & after images showing the improvements brought by the BRT system. Over 30 pictures were displayed in the high volume pedestrian tunnel, with the exhibition lasting more than two months. The anniversary received prominent media coverage and the system continues to serve 800,000 daily passengers.
Passengers were invited to leave post-it notes on a board next to the BRT display. Most of the notes praised the BRT’s work during 5 years and hoped that there will be more BRT implemented in Guangzhou.
