Bike sharing preliminary design for Vientiane completed
ITDP-China completed the preliminary plan for a bike sharing system in Vientiane which is proposed as part of a coming Asian Development Bank loan package. The proposals received strong local support and are subject to final ADB approval. A bike sharing system provides an important part of the public transport network by providing a solution for the ‘last mile’ – the trip to and from a public transport line such as the proposed BRT in Vientiane. The proposed phase 1 coverage area was chosen to complement the BRT, and also to serve short trips normally done by car or motorbike. One example is the lunchtime ‘rush hour’ in the downtown area as people get in their cars to drive a few blocks to a restaurant. The bike sharing system will provide a faster and more convenient alternative. A high-tech 'third generation' bike sharing system is recommended, and revenue streams can include subscription fees, user fees, advertising, sponsorship and branding rights, and government subsidy. The proposed system has 76 stations, 1,140 docks, and 760 bikes.
