Senior Dandong officials visit Guangzhou and Yichang BRT systems.
In a critically important visit regarding a planned BRT corridor in the city, during 1-3 December a delegation of senior officials from Dandong (Liaoning province) visited the BRT corridor and sustainable urban transport projects in Guangzhou and Yichang. Fourteen senior officials from the Dandong City Government joined the site visit, including Vice Mayor Niu Xiangdong, the Vice Party Secretary, Municipal General Secretary, nine members of the Municipal People's Congress, the Vice Director of the Construction Commission, and the Vice Party Secretary of the Communications Commission.
In a sign of the seriousness of the BRT planning in Dandong, which ITDP has supported and provided input to, the officials visited the Guangzhou BRT and Donghaochong greenway. They visited Gangding and Tangxia BRT stations and the BRT control center, and drove along the BRT corridor while being briefed on the implementation experience of BRT and other urban green development projects. The leaders highly praised the Guangzhou BRT system and were apparently even more impressed with Yichang. In Yichang they met with senior city officials and received on-site briefings from Xiaomei Duan, Ma Wenxuan and Shanshan Li along with Yichang officials.
In Yichang the Dandong delegation had a meeting to discuss project construction and operation in the Communications Commission office, which included City Investment Company Chief Engineer Chen Junsong, Vice Director Li Zhonghua from the Communications Commission, and the manager of the municipal bus company whicih operates the BRT, as well as ITDP participants. They had a very detailed discussion on Yichang BRT construction and operation. In the afternoon the delegation had a site visit along the BRT corridor, riding the BRT buses and using the system. They also went to the newly opened phase 2 BRT in Yiling District in the north. The Dandong delegation were very interested in the Yixing Avenue section in Yiling District, which is the narrowest part of the corridor. The delegation said they think Yichang is a very good demonstration project, and that they learned a lot from the technical briefings and site visits.
Dandong's planned BRT corridor is 25km long with 37 stations. The corridor will connect the coach terminal in the south to Zhenzhupao in the north, passing through the heart of the city center and accessing the main train station. The corridor serves the northern Zhen’an District, the downtown Yuanbao District, and Zhenxing District. The corridor will also serve major new development areas to the south, including the new location of the Dandong municipal government offices. The BRT corridor passes through a range of appealing and diverse urban roads. ITDP has been involved with the Dandong project from the early stages, hosting Dandong officials on study tours to see the Guangzhou BRT and Yichang BRT and providing input to the planning and design being carried out by GMEDRI in Dandong.
During 2015 Dandong officials have nowvisited the Yichang BRT twice and visited the Guangzhou BRT four times.
