Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in central China, is one China’s largest cities. In December 2012, ITDP signed an agreement with the city of Wuhan to provide technical support to the city’s first BRT corridor, and a proposed larger BRT network. After years of efforts by several organizations to promote BRT in Wuhan, it was a visit by the Wuhan Mayor to the Guanghzou BRT that finally inspired the Wuhan BRT program. Wuhan’s experience clearly shows the importance of demonstration projects to inspire other cities to take action. ITDP has also worked with officials in Wuhan to develop plans for biking infrastructure and pedestrian accessibility. Through visits with local stakeholders, analyses of the energy and social impacts of various proposals, and technical input, ITDP is helping to shape the city’s transportation future.
